Competition Category Descriptions
Note: If you have any questions about which category your carving belongs in, contact the Show Chairman. Judge may disqualify an entry if it does not belong in a category.
Category-Description
- Beginner Woodcarver-Any subject; less than 2 years experience; never
won a ribbon at a KC Wood Carvers Show.
- Realistic Human Bust- Visually accurate carving in the round displaying head, shoulders and upper chest.
- Chip Carving- Precise chips of wood to form design lower than the surface of the wood.
- Caricature Human Bust- In the round, displaying head, shoulders, and upper chest. Features exaggerated for comic effect.
- Realistic group-Group carving, on a fixed base, with at least 2 or more figures. Humans, animals, birds or fish may be used in the group.
- Realistic Upland Game Bird-Single representation in the round. Dove, Pheasant,
Quail, Turkey, Grouse, etc.
- Realistic Song Bird- Accurate single representation in the round. Includes: Lark, Wren, Cardinal, Chickadee, etc.
- Realistic Human Figure- Accurate, full figure, carved in the round.
- Caricature Human Figure- Full figure, in the round. Exaggerated for comic effect.
- Realistic Shore or Sea Bird- Single shore or sea bird in the round. Includes Cranes,
Gulls, Pelicans, Loons, Herons, Sandpipers etc.
- Pyrography/Woodburning-Woodburning on a flat surface. Includes 3 categories: Human, Animal, and Landscape.
- Realistic Bird of Prey-Accurate, in the round; Hawk, Eagle, Owl, Falcon, Vulture, etc.
- Woodturning- Includes 3 categories- Natural edge bowls; Hollow vessels; Miscellaneous.
- Bark or Driftwood Carving-Any subject; cottonwood bark or driftwood.
Wood to be in it's natural state.
- Miniature- A carving small enough to fit under a box 3" by 3" by 3".
- Roughout Realistic-Single figure carved from another carver's roughout.
- Caricature Animal, Bird or Fish- Single figure/group, in the round. Includes any combination of animals/birds/fish. Exaggerates for comic effect.
- Carousel- Single Animal Figure.
- Realistic Fish, Reptile or Aquatic Animal-Accurate representation, in the round. Includes: Fish, Snake, Lizard, Turtle, Seal, Whale, Dolphin, etc.
- Realistic Animal, Herbivore-Accurate representation in the round. Includes plant eating animals such as Sheep, Deer, Elk, Horse, etc.
- Caricature Human Figure in a Scene- Single full figure depicted in a scene on a fixed base. Exaggerated for comic effect.
- Realistic Waterfowl- Single waterfowl in the round. Includes Ducks, Decoys, Geese, Swans, etc.
- Realistic Animal, Carnivore- Accurate representation in the round of any carnivorous animal. Aquatic/reptile not included. For example: Bear, Lion, Tiger, Dog.
- Shallow Relief-Relatively flat surface. Any subject with reduced depth like those on a coin. Judge decides whether carvings are shallow or deep relief.
- Deep Relief-Relatively flat surface. Not confined to single depth; undercutting part of carving. Judge decides whether shallow or deep relief.
- Roughout Carving-Caricature Single figure carved from another carver's roughout.
- Caricature Group- More than one human figure or any combination of human(s) plus animal, bird or fish figures in a scene on a fixed base.
- Christmas Theme-Any Christmas subject in the round or relief. Single figure or group. Fixed base. Real or caricature. Includes: Santa's, Santa elves, etc.
- Fantasy & Mythical Single Figure- Any subject, in the round. For example: unicorns, dragons, wizards, angels, elves etc.
- Jewelry, Novelty- Must be carved wood.
- Staffs/Canes- (Must have some carved wood).
- Scroll Saw- Any scroll sawed project. Any subject. Figures, animals, scenes, etc.
- Intarsia- Different types of wood fitted and glued into a wooden support/ frame. Painted or natural. Any subject or scene.
- Realistic Animal (any type) Bust- An animal bust in the round.
- Religious-Realistic single figure or group. Fixed base. Includes nativity scene, Modonna,
& child, three wise men, etc.
- Stylized-A stylized design rather than according to nature.
- Special Class/Miscellaneous- Any carving or other project that doesn't fit into any other category descriptions.
- Best of Show- The Judge will select the three best carvings in the show and award 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place ribbons.
- Carver's Choice- Voting by Registrants only…split tables receive two voting slips; Voting is for 1st and 2nd choice of the show's blue ribbon winners.
- Best Display-Only non-commercial tables/spaces are eligible. A single ribbon awarded.
